As we use our global reach to expand our positive impact, an overarching governance structure guides the way we operate. With direction from the top, a centralised decision-making body, and regional networks reaching into our markets, our new sustainability governance structure enables us to make better decisions quicker, and with lasting results.
In late 2014, we hired our first global Chief Sustainability Officer and created a centralised sustainability team and network of sustainability leaders in each geographic region. The Sustainable Supply Chain team oversees social and environmental responsibility and leadership in our global supply chain. These teams work together to embed our global sustainability strategy into the organisation and report functionally to the global Chief Sustainability Officer. In total, we have about 100 professionals focusing on sustainability in their full-time roles across our global organisation.
Our Global Sustainability Board is the overall decision-making body, with senior-level representation from across the business. Led by the Chairman of the Global Sustainability Board, the board includes the regional chief executives, as well as other global functions, including the Chief of Staff, Director of Communications, Executive Director of C&A Foundation, and the Chief Sustainability Officer. The Board makes global policy-level decisions, ensures the global sustainability strategy is implemented regionally and holds the regions accountable for their performance towards our 2020 global sustainability goals.
Our retail markets have a strong culture of implementing policies adapted to their local contexts. Each region has a sustainability committee led by the regional Chief Executive Officer. All of our retail markets employ local sustainability leaders, SSC teams, and sustainability functions. Our global CSO and global sustainability team creates alignment and provides localised support to the retail markets as they implement the global sustainability strategy.
In 2015, the regions developed detailed plans for achieving the 2020 goals. These are now part of regional planning and annual review processes, further integrating sustainability into the business alongside financial targets.
